IPP
Last modified: Friday, January 03, 2003

Short for Internet Printing Protocol, an Internet protocol that allows universal solutions to users trying to print documents from the Internet. The protocol allows the user to:
  • find out about a printer's capabilities
  • submit print jobs to a printer
  • find out the status of a printer or a print job
  • cancel a previously submitted print job

IPP will be transferred using the HTTP/1.1 protocol because HTTP/1.1 has the ability to perform multiple transfers over a single TCP connection and because it is the most widely accepted protocol in the Internet marketplace.

IPP was first drafted between Novell and Xerox with necessary support from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
